Peace Corps volunteers from Mongolia’s M34 group recently received special recognition from Ambassador Richard L. Buangan, a State Department official. His commendation highlighted the volunteers’ dedication and positive impact on local communities, underscoring their role in fostering international goodwill between the United States and Mongolia. Most importantly, the volunteers’ presence has strengthened bilateral relations while demonstrating American values abroad. The ambassador’s praise stands as testament to the valuable contributions Peace Corps makes in promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Their passion and enthusiasm have left a lasting impression, deepening respect and appreciation for the American people.

Ambassador Buangan reflected on this spirit of service, stating: “I cannot think of a higher form of respect for people’s social customs and traditions than by living among them. That is a Peace Corps Volunteer’s greatest asset and most powerful tool in achieving mutual understanding.”

This principle captures a fundamental value that Peace Corps volunteers carry through both the highest highs and most challenging moments. Volunteers show up when it matters most and remain committed to accomplishing their humanitarian mission regardless of circumstances.

The Peace Corps journey is never easy, but it represents one of the most rewarding opportunities for personal and professional growth. Ambassador Buangan’s remarks suggest that transformative experiences will define volunteers throughout their two-year commitment. As he noted: “You will be challenged here in Mongolia. And you will be tested. There’s no doubt about that. Whether it is a hard winter, traveling to a remote area with no electricity or sewage system, or having feelings of isolation and homesickness, you will encounter challenges and hardship during your service.”

Despite these challenges, volunteers serve as ambassadors to build connections and strengthen global relationships. This commitment to service, even in difficult circumstances, embodies what makes Peace Corps volunteers essential contributors to international development and global progress.
