On November 28, we kicked off the giving season during Giving Tuesday and want to thank everyone who chose to make a gift to NPCA. If you missed the chance to participate in this week’s global movement, you can still give your gift during the giving season — through December 31, 2022. Peace Corps is needed now more than ever. You can help champion for the ideals that matter most to us. Throughout the giving season, consider making a generous gift to show your support for the global and domestic bridge-building that NPCA’s mission provides. We’ve had triumphs this year that could not have happened without dedicated Peace Corps community members — like you. Check out the five ways supporting NPCA’s mission has helped preserve Peace Corps ideals in 2023:
1. On March 9, 2023, NPCA hosted 120 Peace Corps advocates from 30 states and the District of Columbia who returned to Washington, D.C., for an in-person Capitol Hill Advocacy Day after a two year absence due to the pandemic. Peace Corps advocates attended meetings with more than 160 congressional offices, urging lawmakers to support the Peace Corps Reauthorization Act and strong Peace Corps funding.
2. During Peace Corps Connect 2023 on September 9, NPCA launched the Continuation of Service Platform on GivePulse, which links RPCVs to diverse events, volunteer causes, and skill-building opportunities, providing the perfect gateway to create a lasting domestic impact. Since the launch, more than 550 volunteers had registered on the platform and over 50 volunteer hours had been served. More organizations and volunteer opportunities are coming soon, including our latest partner, The Nature Conservancy.
3. At the close of our annual August/September mobilization, NPCA rallied nearly 2,000 Peace Corps advocates to urge their local representatives to oppose a House amendment threatening to cut the Peace Corps budget. In the end, the vote was 295 – 135 with 83 Republicans joining 212 Democrats to defeat the amendment.
4. In May, NPCA highlighted the work done by the Peace Corps community in Colorado to help ensure a bill was signed into law granting all RPCVs, regardless of where they lived prior to their service, access to in-state tuition. Prior to this law, Colorado required one year of residency to receive in-state tuition. When Volunteers returned from their two years of overseas service, they no longer met this requirement. The bill now addresses this major inequity.
5. NPCA partnered with Access2Tanzania to provide the Peace Corps community its first Next Step Travel opportunity — the 2023 PZ Project Zawadi (PZ) Trip — since before the pandemic. This RPCV-led trip, which started last week, allows participants to witness the wonders of Tanzania’s wildlife as well as make a meaningful impact through community service projects, leaving a lasting footprint of positive change. NPCA aims to provide more captivating opportunities like this in the future.
