2011: Largest Peace Corps Presence on Capitol Hill

Delaware RPCV Betty Irwin (Guatemala 93-95) met with Senator Chris Coons on the 50th anniversary of signing of the Peace Corps Act.

The Peace Corps community gathered in Washington in late September for several days of activities and events to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps.

Those activities kicked off with the largest single gathering of the Peace Corps community on Capitol Hill.  An estimated 500 citizen advocates, representing virtually every state in the nation, met with Senators and Congressmen, urging support to honor the past, present and future of the Peace Corps.

RPCV Congressmen Sam Farr (CA), John Garamendi (CA) and Mike Honda (CA) spoke to all participants during advocacy day.  Other speakers included Senator Johnny Isakson (GA), Congresswoman Nita Lowey (NY), Congressman Dennis Kucinich (OH) and former Senator Harris Wofford.
