What Our Advocacy Program Does

Our staff and interns work with individual advocates, NPCA member groups and coalition partners to provide timely and important action opportunities. We regularly visit Capitol Hill to meet with congressional representatives and attend hearings. We organize Capitol Hill advocacy days, rallies and other events to promote legislation that is important to the Peace Corps community. This includes our annual National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps, held each year during the first week in March.  NPCA also serves, when needed, as a constructively critical voice to ensure that the Peace Corps remains true to its founding vision and mission.

Through our advocacy blog updates, monthly e-news and advocacy related social network sites, we update the community on our advocacy priorities and other issues of global concern.  We also highlight the good work of many NPCA advocates.

NPCA is a primary convenor of the Service World initiative. Formally launched in June, 2010, Service World promotes to move our nation closer to President Kennedy’s original vision of 100,000 volunteers working overseas each year alongside host country nationals to affect desired change, create goodwill, and enrich the U.S. by returning to it a large body of men and women familiar with foreign cultures and dedicated to service. Improve the Peace Corps and doubling its size is a central component of the Service World initiative.

2010 Advocacy Priorities

Global Volunteerism

Advocacy to promote expanded Peace Corps service and advance other initiatives to increase other global volunteer opportunities. Working with the growing Service World Coalition to advance this priority.

Third Goal of Peace Corps

Advocacy to educate, promote and increase activities related to the 3rd goal of the Peace Corps mission (“Helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans”).  We are currently hard at work to pass legislation to authorize a Peace Corps commemorative in Washington, DC, marking the unique and lasting historical significance of the Peace Corps and exposing millions of visitors to the ideals and values of Peace Corps service.

Universal Basic Education

Working with key coalition partners, we are engaging our community to support policies which promote and advance access to quality basic education for all citizens around the world. This includes advocacy in support of the Education for All Act.
