Governance Committee Co-Chair
As a Director on the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) Board, Patricia A. Wand represents returned Peace Corps Volunteers who served in the Americas. She was elected Vice-Chair of the Board in September 2011 during the 50th Anniversary celebrations. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Colombia (1963-65) in a rural community development and health education program and was on Peace Corps Staff in 1969 training teachers for the Eastern Caribbean.
For 16 years, Pat was University Librarian and Professor at American University (Washington DC). Upon retirement from American University in 2006, she accepted the position as Dean of Library and Learning Resources at Zayed University, United Arab Emirates, where she worked four years developing U.S. accredited education for Emirati women. Previously, she held library positions at the University of Oregon, Columbia University (NY), the College of Staten Island (CUNY), and Wittenberg University (Ohio). She taught in secondary schools in Washington, D.C., and the Midwest.
Currently Pat is adjunct faculty in the International Development Program, School of Information Service, American University, a consultant for library and information management., and a frequent speaker on the Middle East.
Pat helped found two NPCA member groups; West Cascades Peace Corps Association (Eugene, Oregon) and Friends of Colombia. She is an elected member of ALA Council, the governing unit of the American Library Association (ALA) and serves on ALA Budget Analysis and Review Committee. She frequently speaks on American-style education and libraries in the Arabian (Persian) Gulf, on copyright and information policy, library management, marketing and advocacy, and on international librarianship. She has published numerous articles, chapters, and editorials and has delivered 50 papers at professional conferences. She has testified to the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on behalf of the American Library Association and four other national library associations.
Among other honors and awards, Pat received the Distinguished Service Award from the District of Columbia Library Association; Distinguished Alumna Award from the University of Michigan, School of Information; and a Fulbright Senior Lecture Award to Ecuador.
She earned a B.A. in history from Seattle University, an M.A.T. in social sciences from Antioch Graduate School, and the A.M.L.S. from the University of Michigan.
