Two Days Away…You Got Our Back?

By Jonathan Pearson on Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Allison Nye O’Donnell (Honduras 2007-09) the granddaughter of former Peace Corps Director Kevin O’Donnell, recently stopped by our office, where she met Richard MacIntyre (Korea IV), who knew Kevin through their work with the Friends of Korea. Both Ally and Richard will be on Capitol Hill February 28th!

We are now two days away from our February 28th National Day of Action.

We continue to get registrations for the Capitol Hill portion of the Day (Reminder, the deadline to register is Friday, February 22nd).  We are busy scheduling meetings with your lawmakers.  We are starting to stuff our information packets.

Our question to you is:  You got our back?

The National Day of Action is not just citizen advocates on Capitol Hill.  It is equally about you.  Supporters of the Peace Corps – Returned Volunteers, former staff, family, friends and supporters.  Setting aside 5 – 10 minutes on Thursday, February 28th to contact your lawmakers.

By adding your voice on that day from your home, you will be reinforcing the message our Capitol Hill advocates will be bringing to lawmakers or their staff.

Make plans to visit www.peacecorpsconnect.org/advocacy/dayofaction/ on Thursday, February 28th. to find out how you can take quick, coordinated and effective action.

Until then?  Here’s what you can do!

  1. Spread the Word to Others:  If you go to our Facebook page and click events, you will find our event “National Day of Action in Support of the Peace Corps” under the URL  https://www.facebook.com/events/307073592737620/. Tag yourself in the photo, or share it on your own page to help us spread the word!
  2. Organize a Day of Action Event Back Home:  Follow this link for some ideas on how you and others can take action from home.
  3. Please Adopt One of Our Advocates:  We want to provide our Capitol Hill advocates with the support they deserve for their efforts.  Will you adopt one of our Day of Action Capitol Hill Advocates?  We estimate a $25 donation will help with materials, supplies and support for our advocates.  A $50 donation will go a long way to support all the necessary planning and preparation to make the day successful.  Follow this link to make a donation (when prompted, designate your contribution to “Advocacy”).  If you prefer to send a donation through the mail, please write “Adopt an Advocate” in the memo portion of your check.  Thank you so much!

The packet stuffing begins!  Thank you Robert Powers and Asha Khanzada (above) and all of our fabulous Advocacy interns and community volunteers.
