Approximately 50 leading advocates, legislative staff, Peace Corps representatives and other friends gathered Monday night in Washington to celebrate the signing of the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act into law.
President Obama signed the legislation – passed unanimously by the Senate and House – earlier in the day (a photo from the signing is Tuesday’s Photo of the Day on the White House homepage).
Born out of tragedy, the Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act of 2011 will make for a stronger Peace Corps providing better protection and support for volunteers. All current and future Peace Corps volunteers owe an enormous debt to the Puzey family and the courageous women who came forward to press for lasting change.
Congratulations to all advocates who took action to support this legislation, especially the groups First Response Action and Kate’s Voice.
