October Featured Advocates: Capitol Hill Day Volunteers

By Erica Burman on Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Little did NPCA President Kevin Quigley know that his normally sedate office would turn into a hive of activity over this past Labor Day weekend.

More than 30 Returned Peace Corps Volunteers offered their time in the days leading up to, during and following our 50th Anniversary Capitol Hill Advocacy Day. Together, these individuals donated more than 500 hours of time to help make sure our Advocacy Day got the week-long celebration off to a good start!

Volunteers (and some friends they dragged along!)  helped to prepare, write and proofread materials included in information packets.  They also stuffed more than 1,000 folders for advocates and congressional offices!  That’s not all.  They assembled nametags, made phone calls, staffed registration tables, assisted advocacy day participants and took on any and all tasks with a spirited selflessness that kept us moving along.

There is no doubt that each of these volunteers were a critical component to the success of the day.  They include:  Tad Baldwin, Tino Calabia, Marilyn Charles, Melissa Cohen, Nathan Danielsen, Yvonne Darensbourg Melissa Dentch, Jocelyn Fong,  David Grant, Natalie Hall, Jeannie Harvey, Alexandra Hitchens, Bob Hoffman,  Haley Lynn, Harriet Lipowitz, Angel Nawrot, Pat Nyhan, Julia Oliver, Dina Paxenos, Mary C. Pendleton, Rachel Ripps, Julie Roemele, Andrea Seikel, Susan Shaw, Rueben Simmons, Gail Thomas, Mary Thorne, Doug Wade, Pat Wand and Ed Willett (our sincere apologies if we are missing anyone!).

I have to admit that I wasn’t so sure that this was going to be a good idea, I’m not sure just why, I guess just skepticism on my part.

Getting caught up with all of our energy right in the beginning at the panel discussions, and then going around through the hallowed halls in a really energized group, passing other such groups all along the way way was just a wonder, and being with the various staff people in the offices, many of whom were RPCV’s and with the politicians all of which just wouldn’t without the NPCA regulars directing our energy was quite an event, nicely finished off in the reception at the end of the day …………..

The Arlington experience and the march of flags was breath taking ………

Thanks for another great PC experience.
