Next Stops for Peace Corps Expos: Brunswick, Me. and Philadelphia, Pa.
By Erica Burman on Friday, May 13th, 2011
A display of Kenyan materials at the recent Peace Corps Around the World Expo in Raleigh, NC.
With four Peace Corps 50th Anniversary Regional Expos under our belt, the next stops are Brunswick, Me. and Philadelphia, Pa. These Expos are a great way to showcase the work of the Peace Corps over the past 50 years and inspire the next generation of Peace Corps Volunteers. (Read this great write up of the recent Raleigh, NC Expo)
The Brunswick, Me. Expo — taking place tomorrow, May 14, at Bowdoin College’s Smith Union — is a collaborative effort involving the National Peace Corps Association, the Peace Corps Regional Recruitment Office in Boston, Mass., the Maine Peace Corps Association and Bowdoin College Career Planning Center. The Expo will feature a Peace Corps recruiter chat and a workshop titled The Peace Corps Experience: Shaping Lives and Careers, with inspiring presentations by individuals who have dedicated their lives to service.
In addition to “Around the World” exhibits where Returned Peace Corps Volunteers talk about their experiences and projects, Brunswick Expo participants can enjoy music by OLAS (“an original, all acoustic mash-up of very raw and passionate music and dance, complete with songs sung in Spanish, original, non-traditional dance choreography, and traditional instruments such as the cajon, oud, ney and guitar”), the Bowdoin Afro-Colombian Marimba Band, and Young Light International (Burundian dance and music performance).

The Philadelphia Expo on May 22 at the National Constitution Center will be a collaborative effort of the National Peace Corps Association, the Peace Corps Regional Recruitment Office in New York, N.Y. and the Philadelphia Area Peace Corps Association. It will follow a similar format to the previous Expos: a Peace Corps recruiter chat, a workshop titled The Peace Corps Experience: Shaping Lives and Careers (this time with RPCV panelists representing Jamaica, Mali, Peru, Guatemala and Nepal), and table displays where RPCVs can share about their countries of service.
