Sarge, Peace Corps and the State of the Union
By Jonathan Pearson on Wednesday, January 19th, 2011
It is the most anticipated and most watched speech a president gives each year.
President Obama is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 25th.
Take Action Now!
Please contact the President and take the following action:
- Thank the President for the many times he has spoken so eloquently about Peace Corps and service to our nation.
- Ask the President to recognize the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps during his State of the Union address, and note the continuing contributions of current and returned Peace Corps volunteers.
- Note that this recognition is all the more appropriate in light of the recent passing of Peace Corps’ founding director, Sargent Shriver, and the many contributions he made for our nation.

President Obama, in the wake of the death of Peace Corps founder, Sergent Shriver and the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Peace Corps please find time to acknowledge the every day accomplishments of 200,000 people who have volunteered to take and olive branch abroad in the name of the United States of America. Our myriad accomplishments abroad are heightened by the accomplishments we brought home and shared with our own country-men.
I just watched the Sarge Shriver funeral online. I was fortunate to have worked with Sarge in DC the first summer of Peace Corps and to have worked with him again the first year of VISTA. As was said at the funeral, while not family many of us felt like a Shriver kid, there is a little bit of Shrive in us. VP Biden mentioned a quote from Sarge; “It is well to be prepared for life as it is, but it is better to be prepared to make life better than it is.” At this time when so many people are depressed about the state of our nation, let’s remember this – we will gain so much if we continue to be prepared to make life better than it is. Dear Mr. President:
I am writing to ask you to speak in your State of the Union address about the Peace Corps as a way of performing service to our nation and the world. You have spoken before about the Peace Corps, and I want to thank you for that.
Please recognize the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps during your address, and note the continuing contributions of current and returned Peace Corps volunteers. Such recognition would be all the more appropriate in light of the recent passing of Peace Corps’ founding director, Sargent Shriver, and the many contributions he made to and on behalf of our nation.
Thank you.
