Your Voice Needed for Universal Basic Education
By Jonathan Pearson on Friday, September 10th, 2010
This year the National Peace Corps Association has included universal basic education as one of our advocacy priorities. As a Peace Corps Volunteer who has worked in or is familiar with the field of education, you can play an extremely important role in this effort, simply by taking a few minutes to share your experience.
The following message is from Joanna Kuebler, Director of the Global Campagin for Education-U.S. Please send us your testimony to email@example.com by September 16th so your voice can be added to the push for universal basic education.
More than 72 million children around the world do not have access to quality basic education – more than half of those children are girls. As education budgets are being cut globally, it is imperative that we share stories from around the world about the importance of access to quality education in developing nations and why U.S. support of education programs is vital.
As a candidate in 2008, President Obama pledged $2 billion to a Global Fund For Education. A Global Fund for Education that promotes country-driven education plans is the most effective way to ensure universal basic education for all children. Universal Basic Education is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) agreed to by more than 190 nations, including the U.S. looking to halve global poverty by 2015. As President Obama prepares his plan for the MDG Summit to be held this September in New York, it is essential that he includes education as a key focus of his development efforts.
As Returned Peace Corps volunteers who understand the importance of quality basic education, your stories can help underscore just how important investing in basic education is to a developing community, country or region. Please share your stories from the field and to help ensure that education is the development priority it must be if we are to ensure access to education for all children.
Once again please submit your testimonial to firstname.lastname@example.org by September 16th.
